Environmental Bird Poo Pundit

Bizarro is brought to you today by Not My Lunch.

When drawing this cartoon I was looking on the Interwebs for reference for a Smart Car and found a picture of one that had actually been converted into one of these big-wheel beasts. Of course. I should have known someone would. How much did they spend? Was it worth it? Does he get paid for showing up places with it? Is there a point to it other than to own something weird? Not judging, just wondering.

Some fun background gags here are the “Bunnyville Pie Factory,” and “First National Bang of America,” and my favorite, “Tattoos While You Wait”. What other kind of tattoos are there?

These other two cartoons get us caught up to date until Monday. I think about pigeons a lot because we have a flock that live in our neighborhood and regularly feed in our backyard. We also nurse sick pigeons back to health and add them to the flock from time to time. I’ve always really loved pigeons; I’m not one of those who thinks they are “flying rats.” Come to think of it, I like rats, too, but I don’t feed them in my yard.

Here’s a fun pic of me in our bathroom with two pigeons about to be released. They were orphaned when too young to survive so someone fed them and got them all-growed-up so they could join their kind. They left this morning and gave us a wink and a thumbs-up to show their thanks. (Yes, I’m shirtless but I was in my own bathroom so I think it’s allowed.)

Speaking of politics, I got an email this morning saying that at a recent GOP debate, the crowd booed a serving soldier in the audience who asked a question. His problem was that he admitted to being gay and asked something about the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell”. According to this report, none of the candidates criticized the audience’s reaction. If that’s true, can you imagine what would happen if a Democratic crowd had booed a serving soldier? If someone is willing to risk their life to preserve your right to be a bigoted asshole in a free country, what kind of crap-monkey would criticize them because of whom they find sexually attractive in their private life? I try keep specific politics like this out of my blog, but I f**king hate people like that. Come out of the dark ages, people.

Have a great weekend, my dear readers.

  1. When we build the Dan Piraro Monument on the mall in Washington DC, we’re going to engrave ” If someone is willing to risk their life to preserve your right to be a bigoted asshole in a free country, what kind of crap-monkey would criticize them because of whom they find sexually attractive in their private life?” on the rotunda.

This, of course, will lead future generations of pundits to ignore the concept of risking your life to preserve someone else’s freedom and to quarrel over the exact meaning of “crap-monkey.”

I f**king hate people like that too..I am so outraged by those a-holes that s**t on the families of a soldiers funeral because he is gay..what is gay anyway who cares..the only people I know who do is my single gay boyfriend (I call him my boyfriend : ) <3 ) …and of course I can't stop now..I ended a friendship of 7 years pretty much over that soldiers funerals business. this person said "It's free speech whether we like it or not, deal with it" : (

    • Indi says:

I agree Joanne. While we do have free speech (in this country at least), we should temper it with empathy, decency and common sense. Unfortunately there will always be those with none of those character traits.

  3. Joanne Monyelle says:

But THANKS for making me experience happy AGAIN!!!! I read pundits in todays paper.. : ) then you give us Tattoos while you wait! and stupid big tires!!!!!

  4. Joanne Monyelle says:

oh and I love pigeons, too. they can eat up and go S**T on some bigoted rightwing conservative talkshow host monster tire monstrosity! Thanks now I feel better

  5. Mark Pease says:

That’s the problem with hate, eh? It’s OK if someone f**king hates the same people one does, but otherwise not! To say it a little differently, the assumption is always that the hater is right and the hated is wrong. That way there’s always someone to hate.

    • Piraro says:

I’ve often pondered that same philosophical concept but have decided that being bigoted against bigots is okay.

      • Joanne Monyelle says:

Ideally, that’s the way it should be, but I am human…More importantly, ideally, people wouldn’t be so horrible as to traumatize others with their hatred..I for one do HATE people who are so hurtful..I believe in non-violence, peace, but have found after a lifetime experience as an activist, all the love and rationale one may impart on mean people to, at the very least, keep their intolerance to themselves, it is futile…. I am going to hate someone who assaults and innocent victim, verbally or physically..this situation has nothing to do with who’s right or wrong, it has to do with people who are mean spiteful cold-hearted bullies

  6. Josh says:

For the record, Gary Johnson was the only GOP candidate to denounce the booing of Stephen Hill. He’s the only candidate with true character (and that’s because he’s a Libertarian rather than a republican.)

  7. Tammy says:

Thank you for saying something nice about pigeons. I think they are fascinating beautiful birds.

  8. Bryna Wities says:

Just wondering if most of the commentators above HAD to express themselves

using language they learned in elementary school, could they?

  9. Indi says:

First National BANG of America? Cute.

BTW, those few disrespectful audience members (and it was only a few) didn’t boo a soldier in the audience asking a question about DADT. They booed a video of him asking the question. Why a video? Because he’s still frickin’ deployed in Iraq! I mean, this man is brave enough to volunteer to serve our country and then brave enough to stand up for his lifestyle. He should be cheered, not jeered.

    • alanborky says:

Indi, that’s the trouble with booing – as well as booing the booer – one sometimes can misinterpret what’s going on. For instance, were these guys booing this guy because of what he said, because they thought he was being cowardly by having his say by video (i.e., they didn’t realise it was due to logistics), or because they felt he was being self indulgent at the expense of the so-called greater good?

As a natural booer myself I only have to see Tony Blair’s image and it’s all I can do not to sound off.

Every time I manage to train myself to give him the benefit of the doubt, though, he immediately goes and opens his trap and says something even more imbecilically self-glorying than the last time.

I felt similar about Thatcher but at least as soon as she was out of office she didn’t say things seemingly designed to put herself back in the spotlight or to rewrite history.

Unlike many of my countrymen – not to mention some family members – I tend to view Blair and to a lesser degree Thatcher as the villains of the piece and not the seemingly more ingenuous Reagan and W.

My wife painted our bathroom walls and ceiling that same shade of yellow. And we have black and white subway tile halfway up the walls just like yours too. Are you sure that’s your bathroom and not mine?

  11. Jane says:

In response to all the above comments….

Bring on the swearing, I have no problems with it in my vicinity….

Yes, you can be bigoted towards knobjockeys, they deserve it ;) (I just hate everyone equally, it’s much easier that way :P)….nothing nicer than to discrimate against thoses who discrimiate! ;)

*Gets really annoyed with the whole ‘Be proud of our soliders’ statements… Ofcourse people are proud of soliders that fight (and obviously humiliated with our Govts)- sigh, why does this have to be stated? It has turned into a unecessary point that oozes patriotism and imperialism (to some extent)…. yuk.

And lastly…. ahoi ahoi from Australia. Love your blog Dan! xo

    • Piraro says:

Thanks, Jane, love your comments. You Down Under permanently, or just visiting?

      • Jane says:

Cheers Dan! I live here ‘permanently’ (Yikes- that scares me) ;) Was born in Brisbane, living in Canberra doing my thesis on Evolution at ANU…. My Prof. had some of your comics blu-tac’ed to his door- that’s how I came across you :) You have some crackers!! Quite a nice following in the Land of Oz from what I can gather…. Keep up the great work! :)

  12. alanborky says:

Dan, I didn’t get the tattoo gag you intended until you explained it.

In fact, being an idiot, I thought it was referring to some new type of tattoo parlour where they create open wounds – to insert things like rings et al – then draw corresponding images around them!

  13. alanborky says:

P.S. I’m surprised you haven’t tried tattoo designing yourself – your drawing style would look fantastically vivid etched across skin!

  14. Linus Hollis says:

We let our daughter use stick-on tattoos [the not-while-you-wait temporary kind] and she now has outgrown them except a little honeybee for her name. Even stranger, her mother and I have no piercings [no earlobes], but she has a few subtle ones. Makes birthday presents easier.

  15. Tommy says:

For some reason I keep reading “bigtoed” instead of “bigoted”. Is there something wrong with me? :)

  16. Cylar says:

    Dan…that’s NOT what happened.

Two audience members booed. Out of a group of five thousand people. And they didn’t make a sound when the soldier introduced himself as gay. They booed after he went on to ask how the candidates would stop the “progress” on gay rights in the military from being undone. Listen to an actual recording of what happened that night, like I have.

I’m tired of hearing people misrepresent this just because it doesn’t jibe with their left-wing narratives about what bigots Republicans are supposed to be.
